Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD DVR - Product of the Week
Sunday April 30, 2006
The Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD Digital Video Recorder is available as a lease unit from several major cable companies, and is an excellent choice for cable subscribers. The Explorer 8300HD is a high definition, dual-tuner DVR. Users can record up to 90 hours of standard definition TV, and up to 20 hours of high definition programming on the 160GB hard drive. Dual tuners means users can record two shows at once, while watching a third pre-recorded show. The Explorer 8300HD lets users pause, rewind and instant replay live TV and includes a picture-in-picture (PIP) feature. Includes component, HDMI and digital audio out for connecting to an HDTV and recording in Dolby Digital 5.1. Add more storage space by attaching an external hard drive via a Serial ATA connector.

Have you noticed that the PIP feature on an 16:9 screen tends to function as if it were on a 4:3 screen? i.e. it’s not very close to the corners. Do you know of any way to fix this?
My cable company doesn’t offer this unit, I use a Motorola DVR from Comcast, which doesn’t include PIP. I would pose your question to your cable provider or the TV manufacturer.
If you try to record shows that start early or run late, it’s impossible to adjust the time capture in either direction. Or, rather, you can adjust it, but the unit doesn’t remember the setting. Piece of junk, it’s really of no practical use.
