Cablevision sued over "Remote Storage DVR"
Wednesday May 31, 2006
I reported on the remote storage DVR a while back as a possible new entry into the DVR world. The RS-DVR would allow consumers to record, pause and rewind live TV, not on a box in their home, but on a central server at Cablevision. Fox, NBC Universal, Paramount Pictures, CBS, Disney and others have decided to sue Cablevision in order to prevent this service, claiming "Cablevision is selling not a DVR, but a video on demand service, without paying the studios a license fee as they do for VOD." This will be a very interesting case for the future of the DVR technology. To read the full report, see the article from USA Today.
