Can you Connect an External Hard Drive to a Digital Video Recorder (DVR)?

From Sal Prince, for About.com

Question: Can you Connect an External Hard Drive to a Digital Video Recorder (DVR)?

Answer: There are two Cable Digital Video Recorders that are set up to work with an external hard drive. The first is the Motorola DCT-6412, a dual tuner High-Definition Digital Video Recorder that is offered by Comcast and Cox. While the technology is available on this unit, it is currently a "future" feature and currently does not work. The other unit that can work with an external hard drive is the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD, which is also a dual-tuner HD DVR offered by Cablevision and Time Warner cable. A user can attach an external Serial ATA hard drive to the Serial ATA connector on the DVR and enjoy extra recording time using the external hard drive. Here's hoping that the Motorola DCT-6412 will soon offer this feature for extra recording space as well.
