What is ATSC?

Question: What is ATSC?

ATSC stands for Advanced Television Systems Committee. An ATSC tuner allows for the reception of digital ATSC signals. These are the types of signals broadcast over-the-air by television stations in the United States.

ATSC tuners can be placed into many consumer electronic devices including TVs, VCRs, DVD recorders and Blu-ray players. As of March 1st, 2007, any consumer electronic device which includes a tuner must have an ATSC tuner. This is required due to television stations ceasing analog (NTSC) broadcast as of June 12th, 2009.

Older consumer electronic devices which do not contain an ATSC tuner may receive and display ATSC signals by way of a digital converter box.
