Definition:

First introduced in Windows XP Media Center Edition in 2004, Media Center is a digital video recorder and media playback software developed by Microsoft. It was also included in Windows Vista Premium and Ultimate editions as well as Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate.

The software can record television programming from antenna, cable or satellite through the use of TV tuners. Media Center can also access photos, music and video files stored on hard drives or locally networked computers. In the US, Internet TV programming and Netflix are available.

Content from a Windows Media Center PC can be accessed on other televisions in the home through the use of Media Center Extenders.
