What is an Electronic Programming Guide (EPG)?

From Sal Prince, for About.com

Question: What is an Electronic Programming Guide (EPG)?

Learn about Electronic Programming Guides (EPGs) that are built in to Digital Video Recorders.

Answer: An Electronic Program Guide (EPG) is an application used with Digital Video Recorders, set-top Cable and Satellite boxes, and newer TVs to list current and scheduled programs that are or will be available on each channel. In addition, a short summary or commentary for each program is listed. Think of an EPG as the electronic equivalent of a TV Guide.

An EPG is accessed using a remote control. Menus are provided that allow the user to view a list of programs scheduled for the next few hours up to several days in advance. A typical EPG includes options to set parental controls, order pay-per-view programming, search for programs based on theme or category, and set recordings for the future.
