What is ReplayTV?

From Sal Prince, for About.com

Question: What is ReplayTV?

What is ReplayTV?

Answer: ReplayTV is a Digital Video Recorder and a subscription service. The box is a Set Top Digital Video Recorder ( DVR ) that allows you to connect Antenna, Cable or Satellite signals to the ReplayTV and then output those signals to any type of TV (Analog, Digital, High Def). It can output progressive scan signals (480p) to a comparably equipped TV. It functions like any other DVR, in that it allows a user to pause and rewind "live" TV and records your favorite TV shows to a Hard Drive for later viewing.

Similar to TiVo, it requires you to pay a monthly fee of $12.95 to use the Electronic Programming Guide (EPG). Or, you can pay a one-time fee of $299 to get lifetime service. The EPG allows users to set programs to record days or weeks in advance. The guide downloads nightly from a phone jack or broadband internet connection.

ReplayTV currently offers 40/80/160 and 320GB hard drives in their 5500 Series DVRs. The larger the drive, the more recordings you can fit onto the hard drive.
