TiVo HD High Definition Digital Video Recorder:
TiVo HD is the new TiVo Digital Video Recorder that is similar to the TiVo Series 3 HD DVR, but at $299, costs much less than the TiVo Series 3 HD (available for around $799). The new TiVo HD includes the following features:
- Control Cable TV with Record, Pause, Rewind, and Fast-Forward in HD
- Record two HD channels at once, while watching another recorded show
- 160GB Hard Drive records up to 20 hours in HD (or 180 hours in Standard Definition)
- Dual CableCards, located in the front, replaces your Cable Box
- Support for analog cable (standard definition) and ATSC over-the-air high definition recording
- Requires Subscription to the TiVo Service
- Output Resolutions: 480i, 480p,720p, 1080i
- Audio Outputs: Optical Digital Audio, RCA Stereo Audio
- Video Outputs: HDMI, Component, Composite, S-Video
- Ethernet port, 2 USB ports
What's different about the $299 TiVo HD compared to the $799 TiVo Series 3 HD?
- Smaller Hard Drive resulting in less HD Recording time
- Less expensive internal parts used
- No OLED front display
- No THX certification
- Comes with the standard Series2 remote control, not the Series3 remote
- No Satellite TV support
For about $500 less, the new TiVo HD is a much better buy than the TiVo HD Series 3, the only real disadvantage being that you get 12 more hours of HD recording time with the Series 3 HD than the TiVo HD (32 compared to 20). But is 12 more hours worth an extra $500? I think not.
